Genna, also known as Liddet,is Ethiopia’s version of Christmas and Celebrated on January 7th, Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) in Lalibela is one of the most extraordinary and spiritually moving festivals in Ethiopia. The town—famous for its rock-hewn churches—becomes a sacred gathering place for thousands of pilgrims dressed in white traditional clothing, who come from across the country, many on foot, to celebrate this holy day.
The celebration begins the night before with a lengthy church vigil, accompanied by prayers, chanting, and the mesmerizing rhythms of traditional drums and sistra. Worshippers gather around the historic churches—especially Bete Maryam—where priests perform ancient liturgical rituals that have remained unchanged for centuries.
As dawn breaks on Genna morning, the mood shifts from solemnity to joyous celebration, marking the end of Tsome Gehad (the 40-day Advent fast). Families and visitors alike enjoy Doro Wot (spicy chicken stew) as a traditional first meal, and the streets come alive with dancing, music, and cultural expressions.
Experiencing Genna in Lalibela is not just witnessing a holiday—it’s stepping into a living tradition that beautifully blends faith, culture, and ancient heritage.
