Embark on an unforgettable adventure from the searing depths of the Danakil Depression — one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth — to the rugged highlands of Tigray. Our journey descends into the heart of Danakil, where we explore the shimmering shores of Lake Afrera, the otherworldly terrain of Dallol, and trek to the summit of the active Erta Ale volcano. From nearly 120 meters below sea level, we trace the historic Salt Caravan route, ascending the dramatic escarpments of the Rift Valley into the Tigrayan mountains. After days immersed in salt and desert winds, we’ll unwind and refresh in the highlands.
Discover one of the most geologically active and visually stunning regions on Earth. You’ll witness the Danakil desert in all its raw beauty — from a lava-filled crater at Erta Ale to Dallol’s vibrant salt formations, sulfur springs, geysers, and steam vents. At the vast salt flats of Lake Assale, the landscape resembles a lunar surface, where traditional salt mining has persisted with camel caravans since ancient times.
This expedition leads us across the Afar Triangle from south to north, spending three full days and nights at the Erta Ale volcano and two full days exploring Dallol and the salt lake. In the remote settlement of Ahmed Ela, we’ll observe the age-old craft of salt extraction: cutting, shaping, and loading blocks of salt — the “white gold” — onto camel caravans.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Addis Ababa – City Exploration

Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you’ll be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. After breakfast, we embark on a guided city tour starting at 9:00 AM. As the third-highest capital city in the world (situated at 2,400 meters above sea level), Addis offers much to explore. Highlights include the National Museum—home to the world-renowned fossil “Lucy”—and the Ethnological Museum located within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie. We’ll also experience the vibrant energy of a local market, brimming with curios, traditional items, and excellent opportunities for people-watching.

Day 02 :

Drive to Awash National Park

In the afternoon, we venture into Awash National Park for a scenic game drive across the savannah. The park is rich in birdlife and wildlife. We'll also stop at a viewpoint overlooking the impressive Awash River gorge and its dramatic waterfalls.

Day 03 :

Journey to Logia

Today, we travel deeper into the Afar Triangle via the Rift Valley. As we descend in elevation, the landscape transforms from savannah to semi-desert, punctuated by occasional oases fed by the Awash River.

Day 04 :

Drive to Dodom – Erta Ale Base Camp

Early risers may join local salt workers at the lake to observe traditional salt extraction methods. After breakfast, we pick up our Afar guide and police escort before driving across salt flats and lava fields to the remote village of Dodom, near the base of Erta Ale volcano. Unlike rushed expeditions, we spend the night under the stars at the foot of the volcano, enjoying the surreal desert ambiance lit by glowing lava and stardust.

Day 05 :

Sunrise Ascent to Erta Ale Volcano (with Camels)

With camels carrying our gear, we start our sunrise trek up the gently sloped shield volcano (approx. 10 km, 3 hours, 500m elevation gain). The hike takes us across fascinating lava fields and volcanic formations. Once on the caldera rim, we descend into the crater and arrive at the active lava lake — a breathtaking sight.

Day 06 :

Full Day at Erta Ale Lava Lake

Spend the entire day exploring Erta Ale’s unique volcanic features. The lava lake—active since 1906—is one of the world’s longest-lasting and rarest. While other visitors may come and go, our extended stay provides plenty of time for observation, exploration, and photography both day and night.

Day 07 :

Descend from Erta Ale – Camp Near Afar Village

After sunrise, we begin our descent from the volcano with our camel caravan. After meeting our vehicles, we drive deeper into the desert and set camp near a traditional Afar village. There will be time to explore the village and learn about Afar nomadic culture. Basic shower facilities are available from wells in a dry riverbed.

Day 08 :

Transfer to Lake Assale – Witness Salt Caravans

We journey north via challenging 4x4 tracks to the vast salt flats around Lake Assale near Ahmed Ela. In the afternoon, we witness camel caravans transporting salt blocks—an age-old trade tradition. After dark, you can observe the nightly allocation of salt cutters (focolo) to camel drivers (Arho) for the next day’s mining.

Day 09 :

Explore the Dallol Volcano

Spend a full day exploring Dallol, a unique volcano buried under thick salt deposits. This surreal site features vibrant hot springs, acidic pools, and colorful fumaroles. Visit the ruins of a 1930s salt mining town once deemed the hottest inhabited place on Earth.

Day 10 :

Drive to Mekele

Today, we head to Mekele, the capital of Tigray. In the evening, we celebrate the journey with our expedition team at a fine restaurant offering traditional and international cuisine.

Day 11 :

Drive to Gheralta Region

From Mekele, we head to the stunning Gheralta Mountains in Hawzien. This region is famous for its cliff-hewn churches, many perched in hard-to-reach locations. Some are not accessible to women. Your guide will help select suitable sites to visit en route.

Day 12 :

Explore Gheralta’s Cliff Churches

Marvel at Gheralta’s dramatic landscapes—towering cliffs, spires, and canyons. Some churches require daring climbs, originally intended to bring worshippers closer to heaven and evade invading forces. Your guide will lead you to accessible and fascinating sites like Abreha Atsbeha Monastery, Wukro Cherkos, and the cliffside Church of Petros and Paulos, known for its ancient murals and spectacular views.

Day 13 :

Drive to Axum – Ancient City Tour

Travel to the ancient city of Axum, once a powerful kingdom that linked the Mediterranean with India. Axum is deeply rooted in Ethiopian history, Christianity, and legend—it’s believed to house the Ark of the Covenant. Visit the Church of St. Mary of Zion, ancient obelisks, royal tombs, inscriptions, the archaeological museum, and the legendary palace of the Queen of Sheba.

Day 14 :

Return to Addis Ababa
